New York Gov. Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency on Friday in an effort to rush the polio vaccine.
This was done after the polio virus was found in water samples taken in four municipalities, namely in Nassau County, Rockland, Orange and Sullivan County.
In July, polio was confirmed in the United States for the first time in nearly a decade.
Polio can sometimes cause paralysis, but it can be prevented with a vaccine that first became available in 1955.
Although there is no cure, three vaccines can provide immunity to 100 percent.
