V, Jennie, Hyunjin, Song Joong Ki and more appear on the Cannes red carpet
BTS’ V, BLACKPINK’s Jennie, Stray Kids’ Hyunjin, Song Joong Ki and more will be in attendance at the 76th Cannes Film Festival! Find all the stars below!
The 76th Cannes Film Festival kicked off on the afternoon of May 16 (local time) at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in Cannes, a coastal city in southern France, and will last 11 nights and 12 days until May 27.
This year, Korean films did not compete in the competition part of the festival. However, a total of five feature films were selected in different sections.
Out of competition, “Cobweb” attracted attention, “Hopeless” generated interest, “Project Silence” was screened at Midnight, “Sleep” was invited to Critics’ Week and “In Our Day” was selected as the closing film of the Réalisateurs’ Quinzaine.
In addition, BLACKPINK’s Jennie made her acting debut on the HBO series The Idol and also competed in the non-competitive section.
Cobweb (Director: Kim Ji Woon) is a film that chronicles the desperate and humorous events that unfold as director Kim (Song Kang Ho) becomes obsessed with seeing the end of the 1970s film Cobweb. to be remade “make it better” continues to film despite obstacles from the censorship authorities and actors and producers who do not understand the edited content.
Song Kang Ho has attended the Cannes Film Festival a total of eight times, counting invitations only. He debuted in 2006 with The Host (Directors’ Fortnight) and attended the festival in 2007 with Secret Sunshine (Competition), 2008 with The Good, the Bad, the Weird (Out of Competition) and Thirst. “(Competition) in 2009, “Parasite” (Competition) in 2019, “Emergency Declaration” (Out of Competition) in 2021 and “Broker” (Competition) in 2022.
Last year, Song Kang Ho became the first Korean actor to win Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival for “Broker,” which also lends special meaning to his visit this year.
Hopeless (Director: Kim Chang Hoon) is a film noir that tells the story of Yeon Gyu, who seeks to escape from a hellish reality, meets Chi Gun, the deputy head of an organization, and plunges into a precarious world.
Song Joong Ki plays Chi Gun, while young actor Hong Sa plays Bin Yeon Gyu. This is the director’s first feature film. Song Joong Ki will make his first visit to Cannes thanks to this film.
Project Silence is a story of people trapped on the airport bridge, shrouded in thick, imperceptible fog, struggling to survive in the face of unexpected chain disasters. \
Directed by Kim Tae Gon and produced by Kim Yong Hwa, director of the series Along with the Gods, Project Silence stars Lee Sun Kyun, Ju Ji Hoon and Kim Hee Won. Ju Ji Hoon and Kim Hee Won visit Cannes for the second time.
“Sleep” is a film that tells the story of a young newlywed couple, Hyun Soo and Soo Jin, whose life is marred by Hyun Soo’s unusual sleeping behavior and the terrible secret that is revealed when he falls asleep.
Starring Jung Yu Mi and Lee Sun Kyun, Jung Yu Mi is the fourth Cannes guest and Lee Sun Kyun is the third. Lee Sun Kyun, who is traveling to Cannes this year with two leading roles, is attracting particular attention.
Hong Sang Soo’s “In Our Day” is his twelfth official Cannes Film Festival invitation. “In Our Day” is a touching homage to life’s ordinary moments, in which the Korean maestro focuses on the joy of being together around the table.
Jennie’s first acting experience, The Idol, is a series produced by The Weeknd that tells the stories of all the relationships surrounding a young pop idol and the music industry.
Jennie will appear on the red carpet on May 22 at 8:30 p.m. local time. Song Joong Ki and Hyunjin will be present on May 23, Jung Soo Jung (Krystal), Lee Sun Kyun, Ju Ji Hoon and Song Kwang Ho will also be present. Kim Hyung Seo (Bibi) and the æspa group will be present on May 24th.
aespa will also travel to Cannes as an ambassador for jewelry brand Chopard, sponsor of the Cannes Film Festival. This marks the first time a K-pop group has walked the Cannes red carpet.
