“The Bard of Woodstock”

Born on August 14, 1941 in California to prominent New York families, David Crosby had, before the age of 25, formed The Byrds, a group that mixed English rock with traditional American folk. Fired over disagreements in 1967 and 1968, the musician had found Stephen Stills of the Buffalo Spingfields and Graham Nash of the Hollies at the chalet of Joni Mitchell, folk legend and at times his girlfriend. Canadian Neil Young also joined from time to time.

At the mythical Woodstock festival on August 17, 1969, David Crosby already had his mustache and long hair ready for the second Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young concert. He will be nicknamed “The Bard of Woodstock”.

In January 2021, in the midst of a pandemic, David Crosby, in an interview with AFP, had confided his desire to continue writing, singing, performing and engaging with his audience via social networks. In fact, he has produced five albums since 2014, most notably in collaboration with his son James Raymond. A critically acclaimed rebirth thanks to a clear voice preserved by tobacco. But no drugs that cost him very serious health problems.

Graham Nash expressed his “deep sadness” at this “huge gap” on Facebook, without hiding the “fleeting relationship” between the two men. “But what always meant the most to David and I was the sheer joy of the music we made together, the sound we discovered and the deep friendship we shared over the years,” he said for the deceased who “was not afraid of life nor of music”.

For his part, Stephen Stills said of his agent: “He was a musical giant without hesitation. (…) His harmonic sensibility was simply brilliant.”
