The fact that PET packaging is safer than ordinary plastic containers

The Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) plans to issue regulations to label polycarbonate gallons or recycled gallons free of Bisphenol-A (BPA) compounds. This is because BPA, which is a plastic ingredient, is said to cause serious illnesses in humans.

Many countries have banned the use of plastics containing BPA for health reasons. One of them is France, which became the first country to start a BPA health campaign.

With the ban, almost all bottled water brands now use BPA-free PET plastic for their products. PET is considered safer than regular plastic containers that contain BPA.

Launching from the findings published by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Food Technology Research Institute (CSIR-CFTRI), Mysore, India, PET plastic bottles are not safe for food use and drinks.

After that, the results of the CSIR-CFTRI study concluded that although the temperature exposure of PET plastic did not cause any migration in the packaging, they were all below the detection limit.

This limit is also subject to the European Union (EU) regulation on ‘limited migration’, which is the maximum amount of compounds that can migrate from the packaging into the drink inside.

Indeed, the results of this study confirmed that there is no release of antimony in PET plastic bottles, which is often considered dangerous for PET.

In addition, there are no endocrine disruptors (chemicals that can interfere with the endocrine system or the body’s hormone system, such as those in BPA plastic) in the use of PET plastic bottles.

In general, the results of this research concluded that there are no chemical compounds in PET plastic bottles that violate the limits of European Union legislation.

“PET is a unique plastic that is used worldwide for food, medicine, water, vegetable oil, personal care, etc. Industries, Ministry of Science and Technology. Technology, India Dr. Shekhar C. Mande.

“This research project not only analyzed the leaching conditions (extraction of compounds), but also analyzed the chemical composition of PET plastic, and further investigated the possible presence or absence of endocrine disruptors. This research is definitely more relevant than the standard tests,” he said.

This information reinforces the CSIR research report on PET plastic bottles which have been proven not to cause endocrine disrupting activities.

On the other hand, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Health Canada, and the European Food Safety Authority stated that PET is a chemical made by mixing ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid under high temperature. and low mechanical strength to form polymer chains.

“The final result in the form of polyester polymer is known to be stable, strong and durable. PET can resist a series of chemical or biological reactions with other substances. .”

So, on this side, the advantages of PET plastic are clearly visible, that is the quality of safety.

When it comes to the regulatory authorities or BPOM of many countries in the world and including the United States, namely the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), PET plastic is approved to be safe for use in food and drink. .

For more than 30 years, PET plastic has been used for a variety of food products, from packing peanut butter, soft drinks, fruit juices to beer, wine and other beverages.

With the naked eye, it can be seen everywhere, a lot of bottled water is stored in packaging, including PET, polycarbonate plastic and polyethylene.

Most single-use packages, including gallons or cans, are made from PET plastic which can be easily recycled hundreds of times.
