Strike against pension reform: A hooded man tries to burn a French flag during the mobilization in Lyon

Individuals climbed to the top of a building during the demonstration against pension reform, Place Bellecour in Lyon on Thursday January 19, 2023. One of them would have grabbed the French flag to burn it.

Almost 30,000 people gathered in Lyon on Thursday 19 January as part of the anti-pension reform mobilisation. A mobilization that took place without major incidents, even if some tried to spoil the game. Place Bellecour, between 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., several people climbed to the top of a building.

They took down a European flag there as well as a French flag. The people, dressed in black and with hoods, are treated as equals to Antifa, according to witnesses on site. One of the two people even tried to light the tricolor.

A gesture that didn’t please the crowd at all, as the individual was booed profusely. Eventually the flag was snatched from his hand by another of his comrades.

Asked about CNEWS this Friday, SUD-SDIS national secretary and firefighter Remy Chabbouha, who was present at the procession, recounts the scene: “Several people climbed onto the roof of the kiosk in Place Bellecour, one of them started Setting fire to what appeared to be a French flag or the emblem of Lyon. One of his colleagues came and hit him on the head to tell him to stop. It wasn’t something deliberate or a militant act, it was stupidity.

However, the firefighter welcomed the atmosphere in which the demonstration took place and expressed his relief at the end of this incident: “Such a small provocation can quickly degenerate into a general brawl.”
