In a recently uploaded video by KCON JAPON, STAYC played a Check-in Mission game. Sieun and Sumin had to choose between Gyukatsu or Curry dishes which they had to choose without seeing it. They had to come up with a song using the word “curry” so they started singing Norazo“Curry”.

The song “Curry” was released by K-pop duo Norazo over a decade ago and became a hit in South Korea. So the members of STAYC are definitely not the first K-pop idols to sing it.

However, it is highly controversial and problematic. Not only are the lyrics and choreography detrimentally stereotypical for South Asians, but the MV even shows the duo with brown faces.

2020, SEVENTEENIt is Woo won sang “Curry” on an episode of the variety show go seventeen. At that time Norazo job in made a statement about the song upon seeing Wonwoo receiving criticism. He captioned the post, “The letter I have written is not intended to provoke arguments. I wanted everyone to be comfortable. Forgiveness. You have no choice but to close the comment window. The opinion window can be a place of controversy! May we all see each other with understanding and love. We will definitely grow in the right direction!

Norazo is not racist and does not insult any religion! I heard from people of Indian origin today that curry is not part of real Indian cuisine. The reason I ended up working on the song without fact checking was because I lived in Korea and knew some wrong information about the history of curry, so I was taught to think, “Curry is Indian food! As a result, I didn’t realize what the words I used to express India as my homeland really meant and how sacred they were! That was definitely my fault!

All we wanted to do was spread the word that curry is a delicious food that everyone can enjoy thanks to our Norazo style! I want to say that we didn’t write the song with the intention of putting anyone down or belittling the culture or tradition of a precious country!

From now on we will be singers for sure, making and singing songs with the right information! We apologize to the people of India and South Asia who have been hurt by this! Finally, just like us, our hoobae singers didn’t know it could be transmitted that way!

We hope this song ignoring another country’s tradition won’t hurt our hoobae singers who are touring the world while loving other countries’ fans and cultures!
