Shoplifting: In 2022, the number of recorded crimes exploded
In recent years, the number of shoplifters has skyrocketed. Between 2021 and 2022, the police and gendarmerie recorded an increase in these offenses of more than 14%.

Visible on Twitter, Jérôme Jean wanted to alert the public and the judicial system that he believes it is “ineffective”.

A growing phenomenon, however, in major cities the police reported no fewer than 23,377 shoplifting cases in 2021 compared to 26,829 in 2022, an increase of 14.77%.
“We’re seeing food thefts from people who haven’t been talked about much before. I think of the elderly and students. What bothers us is that all these thefts also affect the reception of complaints and the judicial treatment,” lamented Jean-Christophe Couvy, national secretary of the SGP police unit.
According to a 2018 study by Lyonnais Cabinet Pannaud, these thefts represented a €5.3 billion deficit for large retailers in 2017.
