Seine-Maritime: More than 55 tons of counterfeit tobacco products found after busting illegal network

Tons of counterfeit tobacco have been discovered in an illegal cigarette factory in Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf (Seine-Maritime), we learned this Sunday.

A big catch for investigators. The gendarmes of Seine-Maritime announced this Sunday the dismantling of a large counterfeit cigarette factory last Thursday in Saint-Aubin-lès-Elbeuf, a town near Rouen.

The Rouen Research Section (SR) had followed information from Europol reporting a suspicious location where trucks were following each other to load their trailers.

On site, the gendarmes discovered a real counterfeit cigarette factory, divided into three areas: production, storage and a living area where the “workers” could sleep and live in complete autonomy. Nine foreign nationals were arrested and taken into police custody. Most of them are aged between 21 and 55 and are Moldovan nationals involved in the international tobacco trade.

Specifically, the gendarmes seized more than 100 tons of counterfeit products, including 55 tons of counterfeit tobacco products (mainly packaged in cigarette boxes), 50 tons of counterfeit products used to make cigarette packs (labels, paper, filters, wrappers, glue, etc.) and 18 tons of tobacco residue and cigarette butts.

On Saturday, January 14, 2023, late in the afternoon, the nine people involved in this case were brought before the Paris courthouse for the opening of a judicial inquiry.

Among them, four people were informed of an obligation to leave French territory (OQTF) due to their irregular situation.
