Only 8 of the 51 groups formed in 2016 are still active
The kpop industry is a ruthless world and fans are well aware of the 7 year curse.
The idols sign a contract that usually lasts 7 years. Most of the time, the end of these contracts also means the end of a group, if this has not happened before.
Seven years ago, in 2012, 51 groups debuted. As unbelievable as it may seem, only 8 of these are still in operation.
Let’s see who it is.
- ASTRO
ASTRO debuted “Hide & Seek” on February 23, 2016.
The group remained united until recently (Rocky left the group this year) and made their final comeback in 2022 with Candy Sugar Pop.
- BLACK PINK
BLACKPINK debuted “Whistle” and “Boombayah” on August 8th.
Although the group has only released two full length albums, they enjoy great popularity. Her latest album, Born Pink, was released ahead of her world tour, which is due to end in August 2023.
- KNK
KNK debuted in March 2016 with “Knock”.
Although the band went through many member changes, they persevered. However, their latest release is from September 2020.
- NCT
SM Entertainment’s giant group NCT debuted in April 2016 with the release of NCT U’s The 7th Sense.
We can say that the group with its various units continues to be very active.
- PENTAGON
PENTAGON debuted with “Gorilla” on October 17th.
Despite DAWN’s departure, the group’s final comeback came in January 2022. With Hui’s recent appearance on Boys Planet, fan interest has once again turned to the group.
- SF9
SF9 debuted on October 5, 2016 with the release of “Fanfare”.
Despite military recruitment of various members, SF9 has remained active with its final release on January 9, 2023.
- WJSN
WJSN (aka Cosmic Girls) debuted on February 16, 2016 with “Mo Mo Mo” and “Catch Me”.
After the departure of Xuanyi, Cheng Xiao and Meiqi, WJSN now consists of nine members. Following their win at Queendom 2, WJSN released their latest single, Sequence.

VICTON debuted “I’m Fine” and “What Time Is It Now?” in November 2016 »
Former member Chan left the group in 2022 and in April 2023 it was announced that Hanse, Byungchan and Subin would not be renewing their contracts with IST Entertainment. There was no mention of the band’s official breakup.
