IU accused of plagiarizing 6 songs, his agency replies
According to a report by Maeil Business, an anonymous person filed a complaint against IU at Gangnam Police Station in Seoul on May 8, accusing the singer of copyright infringement and claiming that six of IU’s songs are suspected, other domestic and foreign songs to have copied.
The report mentioned “Boo” and “Pitiful” from his 2009 debut studio album Growing Up, as well as “Good Day” (2010), “The Red Shoes” (2013), “Bbibbi” (2018) and “Celebrity (2021 ), as quoted in the police report.
According to the prosecutor, the songs copied from the works of other artists had a similar melody and rhythm and used similar chords.
“These songs are very similar in melody and rhythm to the original works and often use the same chords. “Good Day” and “The Red Shoes” in particular are very similar (to the other songs) to the point that anyone who hears them will find them similar.
I suspect plagiarism at the beginning of the six songs, this is the part that sets the mood and tone of the songs and grabs the listener and makes them decide whether to listen to the song or not. – prosecutor
In fact, “The Red Shoes” sparked controversy when it was released in 2017 due to similarities to German band Nekta’s “Here’s Us.”
The original author, Nekta, reportedly emailed Loen Entertainment, IU’s agency at the time, protesting the plagiarism, but received no response.
The accuser said: “There have been several allegations of plagiarism, but IU has not provided an explanation, instead flagging SNS posts that raise issues such as copyright infringement, leading to the removal of those posts.
I filed this complaint because I had a problem with the lack of awareness and the inappropriate attitude of the judiciary in determining copyright infringement and calculating damages in many copyright infringement-related cases.”
Regarding this, the IU agency EDAM Entertainment released a statement on the same day and said
