Industry experts fear that BLACKPINK will not renew the contract with YG Entertainment
As every year, some Idol contracts, which usually run for 7 years, come to an end. As a result, there is a risk for certain groups of losing members, changing labels or even separating for good.
Surely the group that all eyes are on this year is BLACKPINK, whose contract is expiring.
BLACKPINK members Jennie, Lisa, Rosé and Jisoo may not renew their contracts with YG Entertainment, industry experts said recently.
Concerns mount as talk of BLACKPINK breaking up surfaces. It started when there was talk on various social media platforms of members’ contracts not being renewed.
According to Sports World news outlet, industry officials are concerned as many experts believe YG will not renew BLACKPINK’s contracts due to the many obstacles standing in the way of renewal.
According to industry officials, according to Korean outlet Sports World, one of the reasons BLACKPINK may not be renewed with YG is that history is repeating itself.
“If you look at the last year of YG renewal, there is a clue. BLACKPINK’s debut dates back to 2016. That year also saw the contract of Senior Girl Group 2NE1 renewed. »
In fact, BLACKPINK debuted in August of the same year and 2NE1’s activities ended on November 25 of the same year. As a result, YG dropped 2NE1 to focus on BLACKPINK.
This year, a similar trend could continue following the upcoming debut of BABYMONSTER, which happens to be YG’s first girl group some seven years after BLACKPINK.
Additionally, BLACKPINK faces the challenge of maintaining success as new, younger girl groups emerge.
In 2022, NewJeans, IVE, LE SSERAFIM, and other emerging girl groups were quickly recognized as the next generation of K-pop girl groups and enjoyed widespread popularity. While these new groups have an average age of 18.3, BLACKPINK’s overall age is already 26.3.
Not only that, due to their massive individual popularity and celebrity there is actually no reason to continue their group activities.
Despite being a 7-year-old girl group, they’ve already proven themselves and are elevating K-pop’s status just like the contributions of other veteran idols.
Jennie, Lisa and Rose have already demonstrated their individual influence and power through their solo albums and activities, while Jisoo has sparked anticipation of her pursuits as an actress.
Since each member is already well known in their own right, group activities are no longer necessary.
According to Sports World, BLACKPINK could follow the path of BIGBANG, which only occasionally releases albums and doesn’t participate in music shows and promotions due to conflicting schedules as ambassadors for different brands around the world.
While it’s entirely possible that the foursome will remain as BLACKPINK, the members could focus on their solo careers going forward.
The biggest concern is that if the group decides not to renew their contracts, since YG owns the naming rights, the girls will no longer be able to use the team name “BLACKPINK” for their promotions.
Ultimately, all four members need to renew their contracts with YG Entertainment for this to be a meaningful contract extension for BLACKPINK.
