Finistère: Thousands of sardines stranded on a beach

Thousands of sardines have been found stranded on a beach in the Bay of Douarnenez (Finistère), for a reason that has yet to be clarified.

A deep mystery. Thousands of sardines were found stranded, strewn on a beach in Douarnenez Bay (Finistère). This spectacular phenomenon remains unexplained for the time being.

Among the privileged hypotheses, the specialists mention the trace of excessive mortality, the cause of which has yet to be identified, or a “stranding related to fishing” (pierced net, damage to a vessel, etc.), as France Blue explains.

The conclusions of the analyzes carried out on the sardines will make it possible to learn more in the coming days.

This is not the first time that a French beach bordered by the Atlantic Ocean has been the scene of a massive stranding of a marine species. In May 2022, hundreds of starfish were found at the foot of the Dune du Pilat in the Arcachon Basin (Gironde).
