The author of “Adrift Continents” and “Cloudslayer” “passed away peacefully at his home in upstate New York,” tweeted writer Joyce Carol Oates this Sunday morning, paying tribute to his friend.

He had also signed the novels De beaux matins (1991) and Affliction (1989), making him one of the greatest progressive novelists.
