ChatGPT: Who is behind the development of the tool everyone is talking about?

ChatGPT has been attracting those who see it as a revolution but also the curious since last December. However, OpenAI, the company behind this conversational agent, is still unknown to the general public. And yet, if you look more closely at its origins, there are some famous names, like a certain Elon Musk.

With over a million users in just a few weeks, ChatGPT has become the new digital darling. Whether we ask him to create a CV, understand his intentions towards humanity, write a dissertation… This conversational agent shows an impressive advance in the field of artificial intelligence. This year should mark the generalization of its uses, generating around 200 million euros in sales and more than a billion euros in 2024, sources close to this file quoted by the Reuters agency estimate.

The work surrounding this generative tool is now impressive. Behind this adventure is OpenAI, an American company unknown to the general public. And yet it was founded in 2015 by several big names in technology. In the original org chart we find Elon Musk, head of Tesla and SpaceX, who recently bought Twitter, as well as his friend Peter Thiel, one of the co-founders of PayPal, where the two men met. Peter Thiel is now a recognized investor in the tech sector. He was also one of the first to put money into Facebook.

To ensure OpenAI’s expansion, the two billionaires have also partnered with the capital and services of LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman. However, Elon Musk is no longer a member of the company due to a conflict of interest with his other company, Tesla. The entrepreneur is still one of the main donors today.

Infrastructures are supported in particular by Amazon Web Services. OpenAI’s co-founders also include a former Google researcher, Ilya Sutskever, whose job is to be the company’s research director. Finally, on the CTO side, we find Greg Brockman, the former CTO of online payments company Stripe.

A former non-profit corporation

When it was founded, OpenAI was a non-profit company with the original goal of creating “digital intelligence for the benefit of mankind”. However, it has been a capped profit company since December 2022, seven years after it was founded.

At the same time, the company intends to experiment and develop solutions to develop artificial intelligence while taking safeguards for this technology to ensure that it “remains under control”.
