The National Food and Drug Administration (BPOM) will use a Bisphenol A (BPA) warning label on bottled drinking water (AMDK).

This label is to predict health problems due to excessive consumption of drinking water bottled in gallons made of polycarbonate.

The head of the POM Institute in Medan, Martin Suhendri, said that the BPA label is only for the protection of the public. However, before the BPA label is used, it will first undergo research. BPOM will continue to work to educate the public about the health effects of BPA.

“We are still studying. This is educating the public to be concerned about their health,” said Martin at the Public Health Action Conference in Medan, Monday (12/9).

Martin hopes that the public and businesses will be more concerned with the care of their products from production to distribution. The regulation regarding BPA labeling will be implemented after extensive research.

“Research has been presented by experts. So that people know that there are BPA substances that can migrate. But later there will be more studies. The goal is to protect people from top to bottom. About the risk of BPA,” he explained. . .

“BPA is a chemical. BPA is widely used in plastic containers and has the ability to act as a binder to make plastic bottles light and hard. They pose a risk to human health,” he said. .

According to Henny, bottled water and gallons of water that people use on a daily basis contain high levels of BPA. In addition, BPA which is abundant in the form of white crystals is easily soluble in organic solutions such as acids and bases.

“But it can be quite a bit in water. That’s why there’s an issue where BPA can dissolve in the food or drink you eat. BPA is found in bottles, baby milk bottles, cans, gallons, etc. It turns out that there are a lot of BPA in our lives, “he said.

The potential for humans to be exposed to BPA, Henny said, is probably very high. In addition, the use of beverage containers or bottles are widely used in everyday life. Even the consumption of bottled water is increasing by about 10-20 percent every year.

“Drinking cans are very useful, however, this drinking water packaging has become high in BPA. We put the gallon in the wrong place, and then squeeze it or plug the packaging, releasing the carbonate. It produces BPA which is. soluble in water. The water is consuming,” he said.

Henny said BPA can enter the body through digestion such as food and drink into the respiratory tract.

“The risk of exposure to BPA is huge. This requires a lot of attention from all of us. BPA has a very strong effect on babies. When a pregnant woman eats bad food with BPA, then the uterus is directly related with a baby, the baby can also be affected. be affected,” he said.

“BPA metamorphoses like a hormone. The whole process of BPA will interact with amino acids or proteins in the body that inhibit the function of our body,” he said.

In the meantime, the head of the North Sumatra Ombudsman, Abyadi Siregar reminded the businessmen to fulfill their rights as stipulated in Law 18 of 2012 regarding Food.

“I understand that there is a danger of BPA in soft drinks. Therefore, we hope that producers and traders will continue to carry out their activities and not just seek profit. BPOM must increase monitoring by entering and different sides.”
