All about gaming clubs in Paris

Currently, France has about 200 land-based casinos on its territory. However, there is no facility of this kind in Paris. The fact is that they are strictly forbidden.

Instead, there are much smaller complexes: gaming clubs in Paris. The latter offer neither a slot machine nor a video poker machine.

There are only traditional tables dedicated to specific circle and matching games.

Circles attributed to families linked to the Corsican mafia

In 1806, France issued its very first official casino regulations. The latter are then only allowed in the health resorts, since Napoleon does not want the poorest population to waste their money on games. In 1907, the law also allowed bathing or climatic health resorts to accommodate facilities of this type.

However, in 1920 they were completely banned within a 100km radius of Paris. However, in 1931 an exception was accepted for the Enghien-les-Bains casino, which to this day remains the only one in the entire Ile region of France.

After World War II, the French government had the idea of offering smaller complexes in the capital. Thus, in 1947, gambling circles were allowed. Some are also attributed to families linked to the Corsican mafia as a thank you for their participation in the resistance.

Those roots were evident in the late 2000s with the closure of 14 of the 15 counties in Paris after money laundering and extortion cases.

Associations that operate as trading companies with easy-to-control accounting

The repeated shutdowns of gambling circles prompted the government to react. This led to a bill that was launched in 2016. It envisages setting up gaming clubs operating as trading companies in order to have more controllable accounting than the counties which were clubs under the 1901 Act.

On January 1, 2018, this measure will finally come into force. Nevertheless, it will still be a few months before the first complex of its kind opens its doors. On April 26, 2018, the Tranchant group’s Paris Elysées Club was inaugurated.

Others are also later like Club Montmartre, Club Barrière, Imperial Club, Club Circus or Club Pierre Charron.

Clubs limited to circle and matching games

In the various gambling clubs in Paris, slot machines and video poker machines are strictly forbidden, as we mentioned in the introduction. There are a few matching games where you play against the bank.

Among them we can name, for example, Blackjack, Craps, Sic Bo, Multicolour, Punto Banco or even Ultimate Poker. There are also circle games where you compete against other players. Let’s name Texas Hold’em, Omaha or even bingo, among others.
