3 teenagers commit suicide in Gangnam
Police launched an investigation into the suicide of a teenage boy in Seoul on Monday, marking the third teenage suicide reported in the county in five days.
Police said the student, whose identity has not been released, committed suicide around 2:30 p.m. when she fell from the top of a 19-story building in the Gangnam district of south Seoul.
The incident, which was broadcast live on Instagram, was seen by dozens of people and reported to the police. The student had already fallen when the police and fire brigade arrived at the top of the building.
On Friday, another 14-year-old girl was found dead after jumping from a building in Seoul’s southern Gangnam district.
Authorities say an unidentified man spoke to the dead student about suicide before she fell out of the building. Police obtained CCTV footage showing the suspected man with the girl at an internet cafe for about an hour.
Authorities are attempting to locate the man while they investigate the girl’s whereabouts prior to the incident.
It’s unclear how many people watched the suicide live, but police said they received “multiple” reports from viewers.
According to local reports, the victim originally planned to commit suicide with an online acquaintance. However, when they met to put their plan into action, the other person went out of business.
This news caught the attention of Korean netizens, who commented:
- The fact that our young people continue to commit suicide in this way is a window into our country’s reality.
- Why are so many children in pain… it breaks my heart and makes me cry! Children, I wish you only happiness.
- The older I get, the more I feel like a zombie… that life isn’t something you live, it’s something you endure.
Our society treats those who aren’t super successful as “idols” or people who aren’t employed by a big company as losers… We compare ourselves all the time on social media. Our country is structured for the top 1%. Our TV shows are all about chaebols, beautiful, beautiful people… How many of us meet those standards? It’s so hard to live for the rest of us…
- At this rate the young will die and only the old will remain, sigh.
- Too many people are killing themselves lately ㅠㅠ
- The lowest birth rate in the world, the highest suicide rate in the world, the reality in South Korea…
- Life should be a blessing, a bliss… but I know it feels like a struggle to make it through each day and I have nothing to say to anyone except find the strength…
- We lose lives every day, this reality is so unfortunate…
- I know people say time heals everything, but sometimes it’s just too much to overcome a single hurdle.
- I’m still in shock about Moonbin. But please, I want everyone to remember that staying alive is better than anything else. let’s live please
- How difficult is it for these children? I want to live in a world where that doesn’t happen.
