100″ and reacts to allegations of manipulation
The Netflix show Physical 100 has quickly gained popularity around the world. Unfortunately, in the end, a lot of controversy began around him.
Controversy arose in particular around the winner, Woo Jinyong.
The CrossFit athlete had received very little attention throughout the show but made it to the finals where he played against pro cyclist Jung Haemin.
However, allegations of tampering surfaced after an interview with Jung Haemin.
There he claimed that the finale had to be interrupted twice – once when Jinyong reported a technical problem with his equipment and a second time when he was about to win by the production team who claimed the audio recording was unusable.
In response, Woo Jin Yong posted on his social media that he never finished the match and “never made a request to win the game unfairly”.
Following that interview and mounting social media reactions, Netflix held an emergency press conference at MBC’s Golden Mouth Hall on March 8 to address the allegations made against the final.
Jang Ho Gi, producer of Physical: 100 said:
“There was only a temporary pause and a resumption at the beginning of the game due to audio issues and the participants’ opinions… Both participants took a break while organizing their respective ropes.
However, the ropes of the two people who had been detained for a while suddenly began to turn and made a loud roar that had never been heard before.
We ran several simulations before and never heard this noise. It was decided that we should continue the game, so we did, but the roaring got to a point where it was too loud and we couldn’t use the footage, so we abandoned the game.”
He added that the noise in question can be heard in the videos: “I thought it would be a problem if the rope broke and rolled towards the competitors, so I officially stopped the game to prevent that. »
The producer also came back to the fact that Jinyoung asked to stop the game the first time, and allegations that the production stopped the game for no real reason.
“There are a lot of conflicting opinions out there, so we wanted to show you this part clearly. The game wasn’t interrupted without reason, and a certain participant didn’t raise their hand to stop the game and pause the stream. »
In the original video, the two contestants can be seen fighting, and Jinyoung performs for 10 minutes without raising his hand and saying: “I think my rope got caught somewhere. »
Haemin had said that if he won, the game would end. The producer also responded by saying:
Jung Hae Min claimed that the producers suspended him after he resumed acting, just when he thought, ‘This is it! He said he kept pulling the strings to finish the game, but the producers came and yelled at him to stop. However, this deviates from the truth.
Twenty-six seconds after play resumed at 18:56:07, Woo Jin Yong’s rope moved, causing the ropes to become tangled and his rope spool to stop. As it was an unexpected accident, the production team requested to stop the game and we whistled to ask to stop the game at 18:56:20 just to clear Jung Hae Min. »
Furthermore, the producer claimed that it was not true that the producers ended the game after Jung Hae Min supposedly won the “second game”.
“In particular, it is incorrect to call it a ‘second game’ if it was only 26 seconds after the game restarted, and it is incorrect to say that Jung Hae Min won. The final round was a long match that required extreme mental toughness and stamina.
Therefore, the total length of the rope was not disclosed to the two participants, and the rope equipment was designed in such a way that it was not possible to tell from the outside how much rope was left.
Therefore, none of the participants could be accurately judged. There were times when Woo Jin Yong was in the lead, and it’s not true that Jung Hae Min pulled three times as much rope as Woo Jin Yong. »
Producer Jang Ho Gi revealed that the production offered to have the match repeated a few days later, but the contestants wanted to finish it on the same day.
“There were allegations that in the consultation process with the two candidates, five producers surrounded and pressured Jung Hae Min to have a rematch, eventually convincing him after about 12 minutes; However, we discussed it with both participants and even told them that we couldn’t use the previous footage as it was an accident on set.
And we said that we would respect the agreements between the two candidates. In addition, the main producer, the general producer and three Netflix executives participated in the discussion, so it was not ten minutes that forced the candidates, but a deal with the two candidates. We informed them that they could resume the game in a few days after a hiatus. »
In addition, the producer has responded to the accusation that the level of difficulty had been manipulated.
“Another suspicion was that the production team had manipulated Jung Hae Min’s rope to make it more difficult – that a particular contestant’s rope had been manipulated. On this subject, I will show you the beginning of the endgame.
If you look, you’ll see that both competitors’ ropes are of the same difficulty. You can see Jung Hae Min pulling the rope with no difficulty. It wasn’t a structure where you could adjust the difficulty level at will. »
Finally, producer Jang Ho Gi apologized for the inconvenience this caused to the cast, contestants and viewers.
